It's a wet Monday morning here in the Carondelet Garden in South Saint Louis. A fitting day to remember the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Across this world people are still looking to Dr. King for inspiration and courage. Today is the perfect day to have a conversation. Education is key. Share your experiences and work together to create a better tomorrow. Let us remember his final speech, "Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has it place. But I'm not concerned about that now, I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land."
We have made so much progress since Dr. King's death but there is so much more work that needs to be done. In our city, our state, our country and around the world, social justice and civil rights abuses continue to plague us. We can do so much more together that we could never accomplish alone. E Pluribus Unum. Out of many... One! Today I pray for unity. I pray that faith, hope and love lives in the hearts of us all and that today, together, we can see that Promised Land. Amen!
