A sunny, chilly start to the day here in the Carondelet Garden in south Saint Louis. The sun will mix with clouds and turn mostly cloudy by this afternoon. Highs should reach the lower 70s later in the day. The winds have calmed and should be light and variable throughout the day.
Dr. B tells me my green thumb is in overdrive this Spring with my produce, especially lettuces and spinach. We have been succession planting to keep the harvest coming. We have enjoyed fresh greens since late March and now the last of the Romaine is going to be harvested this weekend. We have been fortunate enough to share with neighbors, family and friends as well. My neighbor commented that she is not looking forward to returning to store-bought lettuce. I must admit, I agree! Fresh salads, soups, wraps, and more have graced our tables for the past couple of months and I've enjoyed every bit of it. We are starting the Memorial Day weekend. The unofficial start of Summer and warm season activities. The pools are opening, but the weather is still hanging on to Spring-like temperatures. I'm afraid you will have to be a much heartier soul than this old man to get into the chilly waters of an outdoor pool this weekend. Rain is also in the forecast. No matter. Picnic foods are on the menu. On Sunday night we will once again watch the PBS Memorial Day concert. An annual tradition here in the Carondelet Cottage. We listen and we remember. Both of my grandfathers fought in World War II. Neither shared very much about their experiences but when they did you listened. I remember each detail. Take the time to listen to the stories of your elders and remember this Memorial Day weekend. That's all the news from here in the Carondelet Garden.
