Sunny skies overhead in the Carondelet Garden on this first Friday in August. We should see sunshine all day with a few passing clouds. Temperatures should be a bit cooler this afternoon, but the humidity is still hanging around. Unfortunately, the heat looks to return for the weekend. Such is August in Saint Louis.
We come into August with a mixed bag of results. It's either been ridiculously hot or ridiculously wet in July. I finally gave up on my tomatoes this year. They were done in. Between hail in June, and the wild temps and rain it was time to call it and plan for next year. Last year's bumper crop turned into this year's paltry production. Ah, such is the life of an urban gardener. You win some, you lose some. That said, the flower gardens are looking quite lovely. The hostas look terrible from the hail, but the flowers are looking lush and healthy. The peppers did quite well this year as well as the eggplant, cucumbers, and the butternut squash is doing really well so far. We had a bumper crop of onions, garlic and potatoes. I should not complain. We are loving the goodness from the garden. August has arrived with its hot days and slightly cooler nights. It's a good time to enjoy the bounty and perhaps take a bit of rest. Enjoy the fruits of our labor and keep things going as best as we can. That's all the news from here in the Carondelet Garden.
