I don't think it's a secret that I love my Carondelet neighborhood and the City of Saint Louis. I don't always like it, but I do love it. That's why our Garden would not be complete without a Fleur de Lis. It's the symbol of the City I love. We have our problems, but we also have incredible architecture, amazing parks, great arts and concerts, the best Jazz scene in the world. The list could go on and on! Celebrate our hometown. She needs a little love right now. Today is Sunday Fun Day. We're heading out with the kids to chase a little white ball. It's always a fun day with these guys. It doesn't matter what we do we have a good time. It's a good day for a good day! Looks like the weather is going to cooperate for us. Mostly cloudy skies with winds out of the South at 5 to 10 MPH. Not a bad day at all to be out and about. Be good and be kind to yourself and others today. Here's hoping your Sunday is fun day as well! Have a great Sunday Gardening Friends!

The Hibiscus is such an amazing, beautiful flower! The hardy variety blooms all summer long. They are tropical so you have to over-winter indoors, but they are stunning! Love the color of this bloom contrasting with the green pot. Just a simple joy for a Saturday morning in the Garden. Cup of coffee in my hand, newspaper at my side, and WNYC New Standards on the smart speaker. If you have an opportunity tune in to John Pizzarelli and his Radio Deluxe program every Saturday morning. It's a simple Saturday distraction that is sure to put a smile on your face. Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies throughout the day today. Another chance of showers later this evening. Winds out of the Southeast at 5 to 10 MPH. It's just lovely outside this morning. I hope you have the chance to get out and about today and enjoy this lovely day. Be good to yourself. Be good and kind to those you may meet on your journey. Have a great Saturday Gardening Friends! Day: 83-degrees | Night: 61-degrees
A beautiful Echinacea to start our morning here in the Carondelet Garden. I love the splash of orange on this gorgeous Friday morning at the end of July. After the storms of this past week this gives us just a little joy and hope. Life is filled with the mysteries of storms and sorrow, joy and sunshine, and the ordinariness of living day to day. The mysteries of sorrow are on my mind this morning. We don't always understand why things happen the way they do. When we are in the midst of sorrow it feels overwhelming. The questions, the hurt, sometimes anger, and the pure exhaustion. Why? That seems to be the question. The answer, inevitably is, I don't know. I don't know why bad things happen to good people. I don't understand the mysteries of this life. I don't have answers to any of it. But I continue to cling to hope. The hope that tomorrow the sun will rise. Tomorrow things may weigh just a little bit less on my heart than today. Tomorrow things will be a little lighter. Hope. Add to hope a bit of faith and things start to change, slowly, but the sun does shine. Like today, the sun is shining. The Coneflower is blooming. The world keeps turning. How? I don't know but it does. It is a mystery. I wish you hope today. I wish you a little bit of faith and whole lot of love. Sunny skies. Low humidity. Winds out of the North at 5 to 10 MPH. This is glorious morning. I hope you can enjoy some of the beauty around you today. Have a great day Gardening friends! Day: 86-degrees | Night: 69-degrees
It is warm and humid out in the Garden this bright, sunny morning at the end of July. The flowers seem extremely happy after the rainfall earlier in the week. We are finally finished with the cleanup and are slowly returning to our normal routine around here. I hope everyone else is returning to their usual ways as well. Heading out to meet a friend for lunch today. Always a nice break and good to keep in touch. I can be a bit of an introvert, so it is good to get out. The sun is shining bright right now, but the clouds are supposed to move as the morning progresses. There is a substantial chance for thunderstorms later today. Hopefully not severe and not too much water! Winds are light and variable. It's a good day for a good day! Be kind to yourself. You deserve all the kindness in the world. Have a great Thursday Gardening Friends! Day: 86-degrees | Night: 72-degrees
After a record-breaking rain yesterday and more rain today there's a chance for more rain tomorrow. We sure did need the moisture just not quite in the quantity received. On the flip side, the plants are LOVING this cooler weather and the heavenly moisture. The Hydrangeas were looking quite sad but this morning they are pretty glorious! My hope and prayers are that everyone is recovering and hopefully drying out. We finally have the basement mostly dry from the storms. Luckily the garden is no worse for the wear and definitely less thirsty. Going forward my prayers will be much more specific! Gentle rains upon the gardens thank you very much. Maybe spread it out a bit more evenly as well! A few scattered thunderstorms are around this morning then mostly cloudy skies this afternoon. Winds are out of the West at 5 to 10 MPH. Right now, it is quite lovely here in the Garden. Take care of yourself. Be kind and gentle with folks today. We could sure use all the kindness and gentleness we can muster right now. Have a great Wednesday Gardening Friends! Day: 87-degrees | Night: 67-degrees
You know the old saying, "be careful what you wish for?" It's true. The proof is raining down just outside my window. It's almost 10:30 a.m. and I'm just getting around to writing this because I have spent the past few hours getting water out of the basement and assessing any other damage around the Garden. We needed the rain and I we are fortunate that our basement is just that, a basement. No real damage just a lot of work to get the water cleaned up and the basement dried out a bit. It's not working particularly well since the rain keeps coming. My neighbor's rain gauge topped out at over 10 inches since everything started. That's a lot of water in a relatively short period of time. We needed the rain but maybe it could have been spread out a bit? I've heard from a few friends that they are experiencing similar issues with wet basements and flooded yards. I hope everyone is okay and there's not too much damage. Flash Flooding is no joke so be careful if you are driving. Showers and thunderstorms are hanging around through the early afternoon. Winds are light and variable. Flooding is a reality. Be good and be kind to yourself. Try to breathe in and breathe out and move on. I know, easy to say... hard to do! Try to have a good day Gardening Friends! The Shop Vac is calling my name. Day: 85-degrees | Night: 69-degrees
Rainy Days and Mondays. A bit of rain today will definitely not make me frown. I might even do a bit of a happy dance. The break in triple-digit heat is a welcome reprieve as well. It's still a bit humid but you can already feel a tinge of change in the air outside as we stepped into the Garden this Monday morning. There's a change in the weather for sure. We all could use a bit of a break from the heat outside and the heat of political rancor that is gripping our country. It seems it doesn't matter which side of the aisle you are sitting on. The anger and unwillingness to work together is fierce and stubborn. There's a quickness to always look for someone to blame instead of trying to work toward a solution. I would love to see Harry S. Truman and his "The Buck Stops Here" sign again. We are truly a better people when we work together toward a common good instead of fighting each other and looking for someone to blame. I believe we are better than that! I guess that's where hope lies. It begins with a big of faith that you have to nurture. Faith builds hope and love rules the day. The rainy part of the day should be this morning with clouds and maybe a bit of sunshine peeking through. Winds are out of the NE at 10 to 15 MPH. Bring on the rain! Let there be showers of blessings! Let faith flourish. Keep hope alive! Let love rule the day. For this we pray. Have a great Monday Gardening Friends! Day: 99-degrees | Night: 72-degrees
Yesterday's official high temperature was 105-degrees at Lambert Field. Crazy hot weather! Yet, the Calla Lily looks lovely. As long as we keep things hydrated much of the Garden still looks pretty good. Our Money Plants, well, that's an entirely different story. They are suffering from the heat. I keep them well watered, but the heat and the sunshine are almost too much for them. Maybe with the break in the weather this coming week they will rebound. The Doodle Dog and I did our walk early this morning so as not to burn her little paws. Then it was decided that today was going to be "Donut Sunday" around this little bungalow in South Saint Louis. If you haven't tried "The Donut House" on Morganford and gotten their Apple Fritters, then you are missing out! It's going to be another Southside Scorcher today. There's a possibility of some afternoon showers but if we don't get those it will break 100-degrees again today. Sunny this morning with clouds moving in this afternoon. Winds are out of the West at 10 to 15 MPH. My hip is telling me the rain is on the way and it is seldom wrong. So, hopefully, a break is coming with some much-needed heavenly dew. Please take care of yourself. Check on your neighbors and any elderly folks. Be good and be kind. The rest will happen. Happy Donut Sunday Gardening Friends! Day: 102-degrees | Night: 78-degrees
Whew! It's hot and sticky out in the Carondelet Garden this morning. The Doodle Dog and I headed out pretty early for our tour of the neighborhood. We are doing it early to try and beat some of the heat and to keep this old man and his dog a bit safer. The Pentas are really nice right now. They really don't seem to mind the heat and the sunshine. These lovely border plantings are a lovely addition to the flower garden. A new plant for the Carondelet Garden this year. Pentas are one of the best pollinator-attracting plants around. They bloom all summer long, even during the hottest weather conditions. The large clusters of starry blooms on pentas are the perfect resting place for butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees. The plant grows well both in the ground and in containers, and even makes a good houseplant if enough light is present. The Groundhog Day forecast continues with Hot and Sunny. Winds out of the SSW at 10 to 15 MPH. Please be careful if you have to be outside today. I'm thinking of my friends working Farmers' Markets today. Stay hydrated and try not to overdo it. Please be kind to yourself and others today. The heat and life are tough right now. Here's hoping for the break we all need soon. Have a great Saturday Gardening Friends! Day: 101-degrees | Night: 75-degrees
The flowers on the Hostas look lovely but the Hostas are really suffering from the heat and drought. We keep watering but it's an uphill battle. The Heat Advisory has returned to South Saint Louis for the next few days. Triple digits for the weekend. Whew! It's hot! This is a reminder that we need to take care of each other, our planet, and ourselves. It's really up to us to do the best we can and be the best we can be. Remember that failure is part of the journey. We learn from it and, hopefully, improve the next time. Just keep trying. If we stop, it's over. Hot and humid. Heat Advisory. Triple Digits. High Humidity. Plentiful Sunshine. Winds out of the SSE at 10 to 15 MPH. Broken record forecast. Be careful if you have to be out and about today. Be good and be kind to yourself and others. We are all a bit fragile right now. Have a great Friday Gardening Friends! Day: 98-degrees | Night: 70-degrees
Another warm and humid morning here in the Carondelet Garden. The Echinacea is looking lovely in spite of the hot temperatures. Such a simple beauty. We have several in our flower garden and love each for their different colors. Variety is the spice of life. It's going to be sunny and hot again today on the Southside of Saint Louis. Winds will be out of the WSW at 5 to 10 MPH. Take care of yourself today. Drink plenty of fluids and take a lot of breaks. Be good and be kind to yourself and others along the way. Heading to La Catrina later for a lovely Thirsty Thursday! Have a great day Gardening Friends! Day: 100-degrees | Night: 70-degrees
Opened the door to a hot and humid humpday morning here in the Carondelet Garden. It's going to be another scorcher on the Southside today. Back to the watering regime I go. The Doodle Dog even cut her walk short today. We usually get about 2.5 miles in, but we barely made it 1.5 miles when she started pulling to go home. I have to admit, I didn't argue. I immediately started watering. The sprinkler is doing its job on the front flower garden. I'll hand water the very back and then hopefully have time to give the yard a little drink. The routine has become a daily occurrence this summer. I'm an old man and lived in Saint Louis my entire life. I don't remember a summer this consistently hot. Then again, I'm an old man and my memory ain't what it used to be. Luckily, I have the time to tend to everything and the plants are hanging in there. I'm starting my fall lettuce plants in the incubator this afternoon. I'm going to try to plant in stages, so we have lettuce ripening all the time. That's the plan, we'll see how it turns out. I'm still learning. This is all still a bit new to this gardener. It's fun learning new things and connecting with new people. I'm a bit of an introvert by nature so it's not always easy for me to put myself out there. Thank you for all the support and kindness. Sew some kindness and love and it comes back to you in abundance. The weather is a bit of broken record. Hot and humid with abundant sunshine. Winds are out of the NW at 10 to 15 MPH. You know what to do: Stay Hydrated! Rest! Don't overdo it! Be good and be kind to yourself and others today. Everyone is a bit on edge with the heat and just life. Try to take it a bit slower and share a bit of hope! Have a great Humpday Gardening Friend! Day: 94-degrees | Night: 75-degrees
It's a beautiful morning here in the Carondelet Garden. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and everything is looking refreshed after the lovely rain on Sunday. The last of the Sweet Onions are drying and we are loving them. This was our first year doing onions, but we will definitely do them again. So flavorful! Today is Tower Tee Tuesday or Golf Lessons with our middle goddaughter. She's such a little dynamo. She's a gifted soccer player and has just started to play golf and even her coach says she has a natural swing. We are, maybe, just a little bit biased but we agree she's pretty marvelous! It's a perfect day for a golf lesson. Sunny skies with winds out of the SSE at 5 to 10 MPH. Here's hoping you get to get out and have a bit of fun and spend some time with someone you love. It's a lovely day in Saint Louis. Have a great day Gardening Friends. Day: 89-degrees | Night: 68-degrees
Stepped outside to a foggy, humid Monday morning here in the Carondelet Garden. The rain yesterday did wonders for the vegetable garden. The rest of the plantings and the flowers are so much happier as well. No matter how much I water it's not the same as a good, soaking rain from heaven. It just makes all the difference. You can't enjoy the sunshine without a bit of rain. You can't know joy without experiencing sorrow. We've seen our fair share of sorrow over the past few years. Yet, there is joy if you look for it. The key is remembering to look. We often get so bogged down in life that we forget that joy can be found if we just take the time to look for it. It's so easy to say but it can be so difficult to do, especially when you are in the deepest, dark places. It's hard for the light to crack through. Yet, somehow, it will if we hold on. Keep hope alive. Have a bit of a faith. Love. Love one another. Sounds easy. Nope! It's work. Just like gardening is work. We pull the weeds, and we fight the drought, and we watch plants wither. We keep on hoping. The storms come and the fog sets it. We keep on believing. Then the sun rises, and the beauty of a Hibiscus bloom greets you as you walk out the door. We can keep on loving! The areas of patchy fog are beginning to lift, and the sun is shining bright here in South Saint Louis. Partly cloudy skies with light and variable winds. A beautiful day in Carondelet. Get outside and look for a bit of beauty and joy if you can. It'll be worth it. Be good and be kind! Have a great Monday Gardening Friends! Day: 82-degrees | Night: 69-degrees
This year was my first-time planting Bush tomatoes, and we are very pleased with the result. They are coming in hot and heavy right now and are delicious! It's been a trying year in the vegetable garden with the continued heat and the dry conditions. Some things aren't looking very good, but the tomatoes seem to be thriving as long as I am consistent water minder. I'm continually learning and adapting. Some successes and a few failures. My Pole Beans have been a total bust. The finches love them though. There is a small bright side as the finches are quite lovely. We opened the door to hot and humid drizzle this morning. The prognosticators are calling for thunderstorms with locally heavy rainfall at times. The winds are out of the SE at 5 to 10 MPH. Here's some hope that everyone is safe and healthy. Be careful if you have to travel about this day. Be good and be kind to yourself and others along your way. Have a Great Sunday Gardening Friends! Day: 100-degrees | Night: 74-degrees
The San Marzano Tomatoes are doing so well in this sunny, hot summer. We were able to make our first round of Marinara Sauce from them this past week and it was, in a word, YUM! Can't wait to start canning all of the sauce soon. Bright sunshine and really warm temperatures greeted us as we stepped out into the Garden this morning. It's going to be another hot day in Saint Louis with sunshine this morning and clouds moving in later this afternoon. The forecasters say there is a chance of a shower or thunderstorm as the day progresses. Not holding my breath! It is really dry around here right now. The winds are out of the WSW at 5 to 10 MPH. It looks like a much better chance of rain overnight. Let's hope for a long, soaking rain and not a gully washer. Take care of yourself today. Be good and kind to yourself and others. We need each other more than ever. Have a great Saturday Gardening friends! Day: 91-degrees | Night: 75-degrees
The Squash are starting to do their thing. The blooms are lovely as you can see. I'm excited for Butternut Squash soup this fall. I love that stuff! Slightly sweet, a bit savory and nutty goodness. Come on Fall! Okay, not too quickly. Life is passing this old man by fast enough, thank you very much. We stopped by the Tower Grove Farmers' Market in Francis Park near the Rockwell Brewery site for their bi-monthly market. Such a great time. Of course, we had to pick up some of Larder and Cupboard's Jam and her amazing Peach Rum Sauce. I could eat that on almost anything. It's that good! The weather today is a bit of a mixed bag with cloudy skies this morning becoming partly cloudy this afternoon. Winds will be out of the South at 5 to 10 MPH. A bit cooler today than we've seen, but still pretty warm. That means more and more hydration. For us and for the plants. Some of my plants are starting to really suffer from this heat. What little bit of lawn I have left is looking really sad. Of course, the Doodle Dog isn't helping. Can't complain, that's her spot! I hope someone shows you some love and kindness today. Have a great Friday Gardening Friends! Day: 95-degrees | Night: 69-degrees
Another beautiful day in Carondelet this morning. It's going to be pretty hot, but it feels lovely right now. The Doodle Dog had a very exciting day yesterday watching the Forestry Department take down a very large diseased Ash Tree in front of our neighbor's house. She got to meet the arborists and was very taken with her new friends. The tree was getting very dangerous, so it was a true joy to see it removed. The forecast seems to be on endless repeat lately. Hot with abundant sunshine. No rain in sight today so the watering continues. I feel like we need to find a "Rainmaker" to come and beat some drums or something to make it rain. The tomatoes are loving it though. We made our first batch of homemade tomato sauce from only ingredients from the garden. So very good! Be good to yourself today. Try to stay hydrated and rested. Have a great Thursday Gardening Friends. Maybe we will see you at the Farmers' Market at Francis Park tonight! Day: 92-degrees | Night: 68-degrees
It's a wild, weird morning here in the Carondelet Garden. My neighbor is having their roof replaced. If you know City homes, we are very close to each other so old shingles are raining down. Also, the Forestry Division is finally scheduled to remove a large, dead tree from in front of the house next door. The branches are over our home and stretch across the street. As you can imagine, a noisy, dusty day here in Carondelet. Grateful for the removal of the tree as it is a danger to everyone. It has been shedding large, dead branches for years. I'm sure my neighbor is thrilled to finally have his new roof. A good day but weird, nonetheless. Today we can expect abundant sunshine with light and variable winds. A beautiful morning here in South Saint Louis. Be good and be kind to yourself and those around you today. It's a good day for a good day, albeit a weird one. Happy Weird Wednesday Gardening Friends! Day: 89-degrees | Night: 65-degrees
It's election day here in the Carondelet neighborhood of South Saint Louis. It's only to fill a vacancy and then for a very short tenure as the redistricting and reduction in the Board of Aldermen will change the boundaries and all sorts of things will be different. Because of all of the changes only one person is running for the job. We thought about just skipping the election. Why bother? There's only one candidate. We assume they will vote for themselves. They win, right? Then we began to think about how easy it will be to just stop voting. The complacency can set in pretty quickly. Sometimes we feel like our votes really don't matter anyway. That's where the trouble begins for me. I can, if I'm not careful, be a pessimist. I can become that old man and curmudgeon. He's inside crying to get out some days. So, I vote. Keep the pessimist unfed. Fight my inner curmudgeon. Keep hope alive. Keep fighting the good fight and do the best I can for as long as I can. It's a privilege and my right as a citizen. I vote. It is warm but lovely outside in the Garden this morning. The humidity is down, and the sun is shining. We are back on the watering routine, but that's okay. There's going to be a lot of sunshine today. Winds will be out of the North at 10 to 15 MPH. Quite nice for a Saint Louis Summer! Be good and be kind to yourself and others as you make your journey today. Keep hope alive. Have a great Tuesday Gardening Friends! Day: 99-degrees | Night: 74-degrees
The Daylilies are looking quite resplendent in the Garden this morning. The sunshine and heat did not leave them any worse for the wear. We spent extra time last fall pruning them back and then this spring we really cleaned out any dead leaves and gave them some extra love. They are just beautiful this year. They certainly seemed to love the extra attention. Really? Who among us doesn't love a little TLC? I guess that's the lesson for today. Spread a little love around and watch what blooms! It seems the heat is returning to the Carondelet Garden today. Plentiful sunshine with winds out of the SW at 5 to 10 MPH. The Doodle Dog and I are heading out for our morning walk a bit early to try to beat the heat. The princess does not like it if it's too hot! It's going to be beautiful if hot. Be careful if you are working outside today. Keep hydrated and stay rested. Share some love if you can. Who knows what may happen? Have a great day Gardening Friends! Day: 89-degrees | Night: 67-degrees
What a beautiful morning as we stepped out into the Garden. Upper 60s and low humidity. Bountiful sunshine and that freshness that comes after a lovely rain. It's just the perfect morning for coffee and donuts. We tried the Donut House on Bayless and are very happy with our selections! The Bush Tomatoes are almost there! It's almost Marinara time. We can't wait for the canning season to commence. It's always exciting when things work. In gardening as in life, you are never assured of how things will turn out. You plant, you tend, and you hope! Hope is now turning into reality, and we are thrilled! Lots of sunshine with light and variable winds. An absolutely beautiful day ahead. A little puttering this morning and then mowing what little bit of turf I have so the Doodle Dog has a place to do her thing. Be good and be kind to yourself today. It's gorgeous! Enjoy it if you can. Have a great Sunday Gardening Friends! Day: 84-degrees | Night: 65-degrees
I love the sunflowers in front of the Patron Saint of Gardeners. A lovely addition to the Garden. I've focused so much on the vegetables this year that I neglected the flowers a bit, but we've been back at it recently. We stopped by a few Garden Centers for the sales and picked up a few more plants. Filled in where the carrots used to be as well as the area where we had the Snap Peas. Everything is looking quite nice, even with the extreme heat. Today we are getting a break from the extremes. We woke up to a bit of wet this morning in the Garden. The rain is such a blessing. Watering helps but this heavenly liquid makes all the difference. We can expect the showers to linger throughout the morning turning to mostly cloudy skies by this afternoon. The winds are out of the NNE at 10 to 15 MPH. There's a change in the weather. Here's hoping for better days ahead. A little peace, love and joy! Wouldn't that be nice? Grant yourself a little peace today. Spread a little love. That's all we need to have a little joy. Have a great Saturday Gardening Friends! Day: 98-degrees | Night: 72-degrees
Another warm and humid morning here in the Carondelet Garden. You can actually feel the water in the air and witness it on the sidewalks. It's not raining but it's just wet outside. Looking forward to a break from this heat soon, but the tomatoes and daylilies are loving the sunshine and heat. The tomatoes are starting to ripen and that only means one thing: time to make red sauce! We have been doing this for a while but this year, I hope, all of the ingredients will come directly from the Garden. So far, so good! It's exciting to watch but it's getting harder and harder to wait. For now, we hope! We pray! We have a bit of faith and let nature do her thing. Hot and humid and rain and maybe some thunderstorms. Could be windy and gusty out there. This is the Saint Louis mixed bag weather day. We may get all, some or none at all. The forecast calls for thunderstorms likely this morning with a chance for scattered storms this afternoon. Storms may have some strong gusty winds. Winds are currently out of the WSW at 10 to 15 MPH. I've walked the Doodle Dog and watered my container plants on the porches. Coffee is made and the newspapers are calling my name. Looks like it may be a relaxing day indoors today. Here's wishing you a bit of relaxation today or this weekend. Be good and be kind to yourself and to those who may cross your path today. Have a safe and wonderful Friday Gardening Friends! Day: 88-degrees | Night: 75-degrees
It was a bit cooler this morning as we ventured out into the Garden. A slight breeze and cloudy skies helped a lot. The Calla was a surprise leftover from last year. I wasn't sure it would overwinter, but it did and it's more beautiful than ever. There is something so sensuous about this lily. The curves and the movement are so amazing. I love the color as well. Here's to the heat breaking today. It's been extremely hot this summer in South Saint Louis. It seems many folks are on edge and the world stage isn't helping. Now we continue to hope. We keep the faith and try to love one another the best we can, and we hang on to hope. Bishop Desmund Tutu once said, "Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness." The darkness will fade. Morning will come. Hang on to hope the best you can. Maybe you can plant something in your garden and watch it grow. Plant a seed and watch it return its abundance. The laws of nature at work! We can expect some scattered thunderstorms this morning, then cloudy skies this afternoon. Winds are out of the East at 5 to 10 MPH. Hopefully the rain will provide us some much-needed relief. We could all use a bit of respite right now. Here's wishing you hope this Thursday. Hang on. Keep the faith. Share some love. Be good and kind to yourself today. Smile at a neighbor. Have that extra cup of coffee. Happy Thursday Gardening Friends! |
